How to Change or Edit a Trail's Activity Type
You can filter the trails available for an activity by changing the activity type on the map:
To edit the trail's activity types specifically:
1. Go to the trail page on trailforks.com
2. Click on the 'Add/Edit' drop-down menu, and choose 'Edit Trail.'
3. Go to 'Trail Activity Usage,' and select your predominant activity and allowed activity types.
Using 'Multi-Use' for the Predominant Activity
The predominant activity allows you to select only one type of activity. If a trail is used both in the summer and the winter (or used for multiple activity types), you can select 'Multi-Use,' which will show the trail predominantly when you select multiple allowed activity types.
If you select 'Mountain Biking' as the predominant activity, but select both 'Mountain Bike' and 'Trail Running' under allowed activity type, when you switch your activity type to 'Trail Running' on the main map, the trail will appear as a thinner, nearly translucent line. If you want this trail to show up as predominantly as a Trail Running trail, you should select 'Multi-Use' for the Predominant Activity setting
Summer & Winter Trail Usage
If you have a trail that in the summertime is a hiking trail and in the wintertime is a nordic ski trail, you can designate this by selecting 'Multi-Use' as the predominant activity, and then choosing the relevant Activity Types for Summertime and Wintertime. Selecting the 'Winter' activity will automatically populate the 'Winter Trail Map' so that the trail is displayed when viewing the winter activity type.
On the main map, when you view trails that aren't supported for a specific activity type, you will still see trails on the map, but they will appear as thinner, more translucent lines.
If you are editing a trail primarily used in the summer for summer activity trails, you can mark that trail with only summer activities. When viewing the map filtered for a winter activity type, such as Backcountry Skiing, the summer trail will no longer be prominent on the map.
If you wish to keep a trail on the map for both seasons, but only show a trail as prominent during one season, you can list the trail with a predominant summer or winter activity, but add the alternate seasonal activity under 'Allowed Activity Types.' This will change the trail to a dotted line if you're viewing a Winter or Summer activity type filter on the map, based on your seasonal preference.
Example: If I wish to mark a trail as a 'Summer Trail' but mark the trail as a dotted line when viewing the map as a Backcountry Skier, I would mark the predominant activity for the trail as 'Hike,' but add the 'Allowed Activity Types' as 'Snowshoe' and 'Backcountry Ski.' Then, when I select my activity type as 'Backcountry Ski,' I can view the summer trail as a dotted line.
4. Under 'Basic,' you can select the difficulty of the trail. If the trail has a different difficulty depending on the activity type, select the button that states, "add different difficulty per activity type.'
5. Hit 'Submit.'
6. If you are a user, your revision request will be sent over to an administrator for review and approval.
Note: the functionalities shown in the video may differ slightly from the UX offered in the app and website today. Trailforks has undergone a number of release updates, and if you have kept your Trailforks app up-to-date, you should see a more updated version of many of these functions shown in the video. We have kept the video up on our help center as it still serves to show users the many features that Trailforks offers!
