You can create and manage your groups from two places within the Trailforks app:
A. Profile > Groups
Under the profile screen, navigate to the Groups tab. From here, you can choose to create your emergency group and/or create a new group. You can also see any groups you’ve created or been added to.
B. Recording an activity
While recording an activity, you can go to ‘Share Live Location’ > Share Location with Group > Select Group.
From this screen, you can create a new group or an emergency group if you haven’t done so already. You can select your groups and manage groups from this screen as well.
In order for your location to appear on the map for members of a group, you must be recording an activity and sharing your live location.
Note: When creating a new group or making changes to any of your groups while recording an activity, your activity does NOT stop recording. If you are making more extensive changes to your groups, try pausing your recording first or stopping your recording and going to Profile > Groups to make changes prior to sharing your live location.
Reminder: each member of the group will have to share their live location with the group for you to see their locations.
Create an Emergency Group
Creating an emergency contact group is an important step towards ensuring that your live location is shared with trusted friends who can assist you in an emergency. Your emergency group is always checked by default when sharing your location.
As a Trailforks Pro member, you can add up to 3 emergency contacts in your Emergency Group. If you are a free Trailforks member, we allow for 1 emergency contact to be added to your Emergency Group.
The Emergency Group is always checked by default when you go to share your live location. If you don’t wish to share your location with your Emergency Group, you can ‘uncheck’ this group when you go to Share Location > Share location with group > Select Group > uncheck Emergency Group.
Create a New Group
When creating a new group, you become the admin of the group by default. You can choose other members of the group to also become admins. At this time, there is no limit on how many admins a group can have.
As a Group Admin, you can promote other members in the group to become admins of the group. If you are the sole Group Admin and you wish to leave a group, you must promote another member of the group to become an Admin before you are able to leave the group.
Admins have different abilities depending on the type of group created:
Types of groups: Private vs. Public
There are two types of groups you can create or be added to:
- Private Group: Only admins can invite & add new members.
- If you are invited to a private group, you do not have the ability to invite other members.
- Public Group: anyone can invite others & share the invite link
- If you are invited to a public group, you have the ability to invite other members.
Set up the Auto-Share Feature
The auto-share feature is a Trailforks Pro-only feature that allows you to auto-share your live location with selected groups and your Emergency Contacts whenever you record an activity.
Enabling Auto-Share:
There are two important settings that enable this feature to work correctly:
- Under your main settings menu > Pro Features, ensure that you have ‘Auto-share when recording’ toggled on.
2. When creating your group, you can choose toggle the option ‘Always share location’ on.
When you have toggled these settings on, your live location will always be shared with your Emergency Contacts and the selected shared groups when you record an activity.
Disabling Auto-Share:
To disable this feature, you can simply go to your main settings and toggle ‘off’ the option to ‘Auto-share when recording.’ You can still share your live location and select your groups you wish to share with when recording an activity.
Note: there is no way to disable auto-sharing for an Emergency group if you have the ‘Auto-share while recording’ feature enabled. If you don’t wish to automatically share your location with your Emergency Group or other groups, toggle this setting ‘off’ in your Main Settings > Pro Features section.
